My total is 78.  Almost no life, but well on my way.  We also have Netflix, which enables us to see this many movies.  If you were counting, I don’t watch scary/horror flicks.  Can’t sleep for days if I do.  The number may have something to do with the fact that during the winter and summer is the only time we really get to watch movies.  Summer you ask?  During the summer you are inside watching movies?  Yes, I answer you.  Because it is too flippin’ hot but do anything but stay inside.  And even then, the low is only 83 degrees some nights.  So we stay in the AC and watch movies.  How many movies have you seen?

Nut roll

There is a tradition in my family that every Christmas and Easter there is nut roll, a sweet bread filled with finely ground walnuts or poppy.  Also, known as kolache, this is Czech/Slovak sweet pastry.  Only these two times of year is nut roll made and eaten.  My grandma used to make it, then my mom, and now me.  I am the official nut roll maker of the family.

This is no ordinary recipe either.  Making the nut roll is an all day event.  The recipe makes 18 of these things.  I use 4 lbs of walnuts for the filling.  I made a batch to take home to PA for Christmas for my mom.  She gives them away to different relatives, takes them to Christmas parties, etc.  Unfortunately, the DH and I had no nut roll for our own.  Thus, I made nut roll for the DH and I over the past couple days.

What a nice little addition to our coffee this week.  Yum, Yum.chrmistmas-0031

Resolutions vs. Goals

With the start of the new year, everyone is making resolutions about what they want to accomplish.  A large number of Americans say they are going to lose weight, exercise, cut back on their drinking, etc.  There are articles in just about every magazine that you pick up about how to achieve these resolutions and/or what your resolutions should be.

I don’t like resolutions.  A resolution is just a verbal commitment to a habit an individual wants to change.  I prefer to make goals instead.  A goal has specific, measurable objectives.  When you set goals, you have a plan to carry out and reach that goal.  Some people even have rewards when they reach certain goals.  Therefore, I choose to make goals for myself in a new year.  Just my preference.  I am more of a goal oriented individual than a resolution type.

Of course, my goals for the new year run the same gamet as everyone elses.  But, I have timelines in which I must achieve these in.  For example, one of my goals is to lose about 20 lbs this year.  I also want to compete in the Outer Banks Half Marathon in November.  With the weight loss goal, I have an end date in sight.  You see, I was told I am pre-hypertensive.  Yikes.  My doctor told me that if I don’t get my blood pressure down by my yearly physical in May, I will need to be on BP meds.  Talk about a wake up call.  I am only 35 yrs old!  Granted both my parents have high blood pressure, so there is some genetic component to it.  BUT, I am going to do everything in my power to change my life and body so I don’t have to do that.  I see the end all of having high blood pressure every day in my work.  People on dialysis that were never treated, or choose to be in denial that anything was wrong with them.  I am not taking that route.  Nothing is a bigger motivator than being faced with going on BP meds, and knowing the end all if I don’t change, lose weight and exercise. So, back on the running bandwagon I have jumped.  I am currently looking for a 5k to run in either March or April, then continue doing some 5ks throughout the summer, along with some 10ks here and there.

I do have knitterly goals too.  Like, finish 5 of my WIPs before I will allow myself to go back to the yarn store.  Spin at least 30 minutes each day so I can become a better spinner.  Start and complete my own sweater before fall.  Plan better and start earlier on Christmas presents.

I also have professional/work related goals.  I have a poster presentation to do in June, so I want that to be completed by the beginning of May.  I also need to decide if I am going to go back for my DNP or my MSN in education, or what the heck I want to do there.  Looks like it is going to be a busy year!

Just breathe…

I just finished a very long work stretch, which included covering the big house for the New Years’ holiday. Whew…I now know what those poor medical residents must have felt like before they past the limit on number of hours they could work per week. I pretty much working, coming home, eating supper and going to bed. It actually got to be a bit like the movie Groundhog Day. Honestly. BUT, now I am off for FIVE, yes FIVE, glorious comp days given to me for my hard work. I plan to clean my house and play fiber queen. I am also making nut roll for the DH and I. A post on that later. Happy Wednesday!
